Episode 5: Mental Health & Cultural Competency with Kristina Wong, Solo Performer & Comedienne

Who and what’s in this episode?

What would it be like to create and perform a solo show about suicide and depression? Sabor y Salud features Kristina Wong, who is a badass touring performance artist and comedienne. In this episode, she opens up to us about her signature show Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (available on DVD), high rates of depression and suicide among Asian American women, and how performing a show that ties it all in can be a heavy, personal obstacle for the artist. Kristina tells us about her own experience in the pursuit of caring for her own mental health and what kind of access we have in our own communities, if not through medical therapy. Although Wong Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest is on pause, she is opening her new show, an early campaign, Kristina Wong for Public Office in Los Angeles. That’s right, folks! She’s running for office!

See her live on June 15 & 16 2018 at Grand Performances in Los Angeles, Kristina Wong for Public Office.
